FloorSciences provides forensic flooring failure analysis, testing, and QA/QC evaluations for healthcare, commercial, industrial, and institutional construction projects nationwide. We work directly with contractors, owners, and project teams to identify the root cause of flooring, coating, and concrete slab issues before they become costly claims, delays, or litigation.

Engineering-Grade Testing Capabilities

  • Tensile bond strength testing of coatings, underlayments, and terrazzo (ASTM C1583, D7234)
  • Ground penetrating radar (GPR) for subsurface scanning and slab thickness measurement
  • Flooring & coatings surface hardness testing (ASTM D2240)
  • Coatings dry film thickness (DFT) measurement (ASTM D6132)
  • Concrete in-situ relative humidity and moisture testing (ASTM F2170, F2659)
  • Concrete slab pH testing (ASTM F3441)
Proactive QA/QC — Preventing Problems Before They Start

We help project teams get ahead of flooring problems with proactive QA/QC testing during installation, not just after failure occurs, reducing the risk of moisture-related coating failures, delamination, adhesive bond failures, cracking, curling, and other performance issues that lead to rework, warranty disputes, and schedule delays.

Forensic Investigation — When Failures Do Occur

Our forensic investigations determine whether the cause is installation, materials, substrate conditions, or environmental exposure — critical information for resolving disputes between owners, GCs, and subcontractors before they escalate to claims or litigation. Common causes we investigate include:

  • Installation errors or workmanship issues
  • Material defects or product incompatibility
  • Substrate conditions, including moisture and surface preparation
  • Environmental exposure during or after installation

Why FloorSciences

FloorSciences' Principal, Walter Bell, is the appointed Technical Contact and Task Group Chair for more than a dozen ASTM standards under revision or in development covering tensile bond strength, material hardness, humidity measurement, forensic imaging, and resilient floor testing; active leadership in the standards that govern flooring testing methodology, not just certification in existing ones.

Who We Serve

We serve general contractors, subcontractors, owners, facility managers, and design teams nationwide, with particular experience in healthcare and other high-performance commercial environments where flooring failures carry significant operational and financial consequences.

Carpeting, Demolition, Flooring, Fluid Applied Flooring, Fluid Applied Waterproofing, Resilient Flooring, Specialty Flooring, Tile, Wall Carpeting, Wood Flooring
Founded in 2010 as a labor-only company, Preferred Flooring began with a 50-50 partnership between Daniel and Jose Gonzalez. Both were experienced crew leaders who felt it was time to branch out on their own. Initially, they were naïve about the complexities of running a business but were determined to succeed. They spent about a year working 6-7 days a week to accumulate enough capital to hire their first employee. Initially, they hired workers on a 1099 basis, but a few years later, they transitioned to a W2 employee model, gradually adding retirement and healthcare benefits. Preferred Flooring prides itself on exceptional installation services, stemming from the founders' backgrounds. They understand the physical demands of the flooring trade and treat their installers with compassion and respect. By 2018-2019, the company faced a pivotal moment in its growth. They increased their involvement in the flooring industry, obtaining numerous certifications and becoming certifiers themselves. These certifications include: National Association of Floor Covering Technicians (NAFCT) ICRI Certified Concrete Slab Moisture Technician Tarkett Sports OMNISPORTS Certified Armstrong Resilient Certified nora by Interface Certified Protect-All Flooring Factory Trained Eco Grip Flooring Trained Certified Flooring Installers (CFI) Ardex Certified in Moisture Control Systems and Underlayments This list of certifications is ever-growing, reflecting the company's commitment to staying at the forefront of industry standards and technology. With their technical expertise well established, Daniel and Jose shifted their focus to the sales aspect of the flooring market. They began by setting up accounts with major names like Shaw, Mohawk, and Engineered Floors. Networking became a crucial strategy, leading them to join the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce and participate in events like the West Michigan Minority Contractors meetings and the City of Grand Rapids Monday meetings. They learned that success in modern business is about being known and visible within the community. Preferred Flooring also embraced social media and local educational opportunities to expand their network and customer base. Their efforts have paid off, and they are now on the radar of many local general contractors, regularly invited to bid on new projects. The company structure has evolved, with Daniel and Jose handling estimating and other administrative tasks, while their sister Crystal Sims leads installation crews, supported by six other skilled installers. The combined in-house knowledge of estimators with over 20 years of experience and the expertise of their installers sets Preferred Flooring apart from the competition. They are committed to demonstrating that not all flooring companies are the same, living up to their motto: "Setting the Standard, One Installation at a Time".
