A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Innovation in Lighting. Environmental Lighting for Architecture, Inc. (ELA) traces its roots back to 1929, when a group of skilled craftsmen founded the Hollywood Lighting Fixture Company (HLFC). Known for creating high-end decorative lighting for film sets, HLFC quickly gained recognition among Hollywood's elite—including directors like Alfred Hitchcock—and became the go-to source for stunning, custom fixtures used in motion pictures. This reputation for excellence soon extended beyond the silver screen. Architects and designers throughout Southern California sought HLFC’s artistry, especially as the demand for sophisticated, European-inspired custom commercial lighting grew. By the 1950s, HLFC had expanded into the hospitality sector, contributing elegant lighting solutions to the booming hotel scene in Las Vegas. To better reflect its growing scope, the company rebranded as Custom and Architectural Lighting (CAL). CAL continued to deliver innovative lighting to luxury hotels while also restoring historic properties, including landmark government buildings and state capitols. In the late 1970s, CAL partnered with Environmental Lighting for Architecture, Inc., a boutique outdoor lighting manufacturer known for its quality and design. The collaboration led to a full merger, and the combined company adopted the ELA name. Together, they expanded into residential outdoor lighting, while the custom division continued to influence new product lines with fresh design concepts and architectural integrity. By 1982, ELA had relocated to City of Industry, California, and developed a network of high-end lighting showrooms nationwide. This move positioned the company for rapid growth and greater market reach. To meet rising demand for aluminum castings, ELA established its own foundry, Fundidora Cal, in Tijuana, Mexico, in 1990. With weekly aluminum shipments from the U.S. and stringent quality controls, this vertical integration allowed ELA to maintain consistent production schedules and exceptional craftsmanship. In 2022, ELA moved to a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Corona, California, marking a new chapter in its ongoing commitment to quality, flexibility, and innovation. Today, ELA continues to offer the same attention to detail, distinctive designs, and legendary service that first made it a Hollywood favorite nearly a century ago. With advanced custom capabilities, ELA is equipped to meet the complex needs of modern commercial, hospitality, and residential projects—one fixture at a time.
